Making sense of Compose performance

While Compose has greatly simplified UI development, it requires a change in the way we think about performance. The declarative paradigm fundamentally changes how UIs are constructed and, consequently, where performance bottlenecks occur.

In this talk, we will explore how to understand and optimize your app’s Compose usages. We will start with the state of Compose Performance and then dive deep into the life of a Compose frame by breaking it down into its core phases: Composition, Layout, and Draw. Using realistic scenarios and diving into Perfetto trace analysis, we will show you how to get your bearings and identify performance problems from a trace.

Along our performance journey, we will look at common pitfalls (such as unnecessary recompositions or inefficient custom design system setups), how to recognize them from traces and how you can avoid them. Oh, and we’ll share tooling recommendations to help you optimize your apps!
